Volunteer with us

"As a former Walker's Point volunteer, I recognize how much volunteering with youth builds empathy. The shelter not only is full of friendly faces but the shelter is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment for both the youth that stay there as well as for the volunteers. All of Walker's Point staff does a great job at making sure volunteers feel confident, safe, and overall care about their mental well being to make sure they can be there for the youth. The sense of community and encouragement compares to no other when you're surrounded by individuals that share a common purpose. "

I need a certain amount of hours or I have a difficult schedule. Can I still volunteer with you? We offer a wide range of shifts as we are a 24 hour facility and will work with your schedule.

What kind of training do you offer? We offer a three tier training to try and make sure you feel fully prepared for your time here at Walker's Point. Part one is online, self paced and able to review as much as you want. Part two is in person presentation where you can ask any questions and we will go over different scenarios. Last but not least part three is hands on with our staff.

What would my day to day look like in the shelter? It can vary a lot, you could have a very busy day helping answer the crisis line, helping with group, and doing intakes. Or it could be a slow day where you work on training, or you could end up playing UNO with the youth. No one day will be the same.

What time commentiment do I need to agree to if I want to volunteer? We ask for at least four to five hours, once a week, for about four to five months (about 64 to 100 hours). After that if you still want to volunteer it could be one shift a month.

I don't have experience with children, or trauma informed care. Can I still volunteer? You may have more experience than you realize, let's set up a meeting and talk about the skills you bring to the table. No one starts knowing everything and as long as you are willing to learn, we are willing to teach.
